LUMID is one of the most popular and successful programmes at Lund University with more than 1200 applicants competing for 40 places every year. We take pride in our academic interdisciplinarity and international diversity in partners and students. The programme is a member of the Global Association for Master’s in Development Practice (MDP), a premier network of development Master’s programmes.
About the programme
The LUMID programme was initiated in the mid-2000s through a collaboration between Lund University and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) with the aim to develop the next generation of development practitioners in a structure with high academic standards.
In recognition of the complexity of development issues at hand, the programme not only welcomes lecturers and students from various disciplines (including engineering, natural sciences, medicine and humanities in addition to traditional social science subjects) but also prides itself on prioritizing its international diversity of partners and students. Firmly grounded in the combination of academic rigour and advanced research applications, this unique diversity provides the backbone of LUMID’s pursuit of excellence in international development and management.
The programme has continuously evolved in order to secure proper alignment with the latest research findings as well as the ever-changing demands of future employers. As a result, several complementary initiatives are offered through the programme syllabus providing LUMID with a comparative advantage over other programmes in our field.
National and International Recognition
LUMID has been recognized as one of the top Master's programmes in Sweden in two independent evaluations. The first was conducted by an external panel of experts in 2011 and the second by the Swedish National Authority for Higher Education in 2012. Among other accolades, LUMID has been described as "an impressive programme of having well-designed courses with a strong practical and interdisciplinary approach".
In 2012 the programme gained further international status through the formal recognition as an MDP (Master’s in Development Practice) programme, providing LUMID with a membership in a selective network of esteemed higher education institutions across the world such as Columbia University, University of California, Berkeley and Science Po - Paris School of International Affairs.
